A MESSAGE FROM MR. BRADSTREET
Dear Parents,
There are some exciting things happening around Coffman. Your children are representing our high school extremely well both on and off the field and we are excited to continue to support our football team as they continue their quest of winning a State Championship.
For the first time since the mid 1990’s we have added a fourth concert band to our curriculum. By having the appropriate staffing, we are more capable of teaching the students based on their ability levels. For the past two to three years, our concert band sizes have been too big, which has lead to an inability to teach the fundamentals of music appropriately and thoroughly, due to class size. For the directors to give a test, we needed to devote two days to our evaluations, and this still meant giving just 45 seconds to each student. With four concert bands, we will now be able to listen, evaluate, give feedback, and then re-assess our students’ progress in a much more timely and educational manner.
The four bands have been divided into three different ability based groups. Mr. Bradstreet will direct the top concert band and Mrs. Dover will direct the second concert band. Mr. Rice and Mrs. Adair will direct the remaining students, who have been divided equally into two bands. These two bands – the Emerald Band and the Shamrock Band – are roughly 48 members each, and were selected on an A/B selection process, which divided up the talent based on their audition scores. We have already seen and heard a difference from last year’s “Cadet Band”, and it will be much easier to develop a good core sound to each group, as well as improve tuning, based on a smaller number of students.
I would like to take a moment to introduce our newest member of the Coffman Instrumental staff, Mrs. Michelle Adair. Mrs. Adair graduated from Dublin Coffman High School in 1995 and attended The Ohio State University playing in the orchestra, the concert bands and the marching band. Since graduating from OSU she has been a staff member at Dublin Jerome High School teaching both band and orchestra. This year she will be traveling from Jerome to Coffman everyday so that she can direct the Shamrock Band. She will be officially joining our staff after the Thanksgiving break so that she can finish her maternity leave after the birth of her and her husband’s second child. I know that she would love to get to meet some of her students’ parents when she returns, so if you get a chance to say “Hello”, I’m sure she would enjoy the communication.
Having four teachers to teach our students should be something that we don’t take for granted. Our administration both at the high school level and at Central Office were able to provide our students with the proper instruction needed during concert band season. A special thanks goes to our administrators for recognizing the needs of our students at Coffman and I look forward to the sounds of our Emerald and Shamrock Bands, as they now can learn in an environment that is conducive to the educational needs of these students.
I hope to see you at our Band Banquet and the remaining events left on our marching band schedule. You should be really proud of your son/daughter – we certainly are!
Sincerely,
Jeremy Bradstreet
